A former monk, educator and Queensland Member of Parliament, the Councillor for Injinoo David Byrne has represented communities of the Northern Peninsula Area since he first crossed the Jardine River as an adventurer in 1983.
Following a term in the state parliament and roles in education, Cr Byrne hit the road in a campervan and headed north. He arrived at Injinoo, living in community and represented the future development plans of the local council as a project officer and indigenous advocate.
Councillor Byrne was also an original founder of the Cape York Land Council as Policy Director and Deputy Director supporting traditional owners to regain rights to land and sea, and to build strong future communities.
After a stint away as a primary producer and study in law, Cr Byrne returned to Injinoo as a qualified lawyer and joined the Apudhama Land Trust as Facilitator. He was returned to the political space by the community of Injinoo – electing him as Councillor for Division 1 in the 2024 Queensland Local Government Elections, to support the continuance of their sustainable community development plans for future generations.
He is passionate about indigenous affairs and sustainability.
